27th May - Wednesday
As I write we are approximately on the same longitude as Esperance in WA and well on our way across the Great Australian Bight. Having left Melbourne on Sunday night we still have a full day and a night to reach our next destination the coastal township of Busselton where if we decide to go ashore it will be necessary to use lighters.
Sunday night and Monday we steamed at about 20 knots with hardly any motion to the ship. Tuesday the wind started to get up and consequently the motion of the ship increased accordingly and ship speed was reduced to 18 knots to reduce discomfort. Today is overcast cold and windy and rough seas, needless to say there is quite a bit of boat action but so far we haven’t suffered any ill affects from this. Recently Nancy had a few cancers cut out, one being on her left calf. Yesterday with the added strain on muscles going up and down stairways rather than using lifts, the wound opened up so it was visit to the ships doctors for a re-stitch and $550.00 dollars thank you very much. I hope the travel insurance comes good.

I still haven’t been able to get photo’s from my computer to phone or phone to the blog but I’m working on it.

Once we leave Melbourne it will be several days before get around to Freemantle and the next opportunity to post on the blog.
22nd May 2015
Lisa helped us perform all those techno duties at Brisbane airport that one obliged to do these days, how things have changed in just the few short years since I retired from work and very soon we were on our way. A maxi cab from Sydney airport and $100 lighter we arrived at White Road cruise terminal about 12.30ish, our allotted boarding time was for 1.00pm. With so many people needing to board ship in just a few hours a staggered allocated time slot would seem to be the logical way to conduct a seamless operation. Everyone has an allocated boarding time relative to your deck level and cabin number and they even send you a text message the day before stipulating not to check in before the allocated time. Too easy, only trouble is obviously no one read there text messages or their cruise directive. Raffety rules, after checking in about 1.15pm we had to wait until about 3.30pm before finally getting on-board, at least we had seats to sit on and surprise, surprise no-one got left behind.
Sailing was delayed from 4.00pm until 6.00pm to be a part of the Sydney light show. Sydney looked spectacular with coloured laser lighting showing up the CBD, Rocks area, coat hanger and opera house and as we passed under the bridge and past the rocks are Sea Princess made her presence felt with massive blast of her horns all quite fabulous but hell it was cold.

Out through the heads into open water the captain had warned us of 7mtre seas, very rough with strong southerly winds bringing the cold from down south.
Bed seemed the best place and sleep through the worst of it and either we were dead tired or it wasn’t as bad as they predicted as fortunately we both survived the night without incident.

23rd At sea grey cloudy skies, very cold outside and very windy, troubled seas with breaking wave tops, boat action not uncomfortable.

24th Melbourne to do some shopping for items we didn’t want to carry on the plane. – A good opportunity to try uploading to the blog so if you are reading this, it worked.

20th May 2015
In the past couple of days I have been through a rather interesting exercise regarding posting this blog while we are away.

Having read that Sea Princess has WiFi throughout the ship I assumed it would all be hassle free.
I Googled for the relevant information only to find out that WiFi charges are something in the order of almost a US dollar a minute and the comment was ‘
“Don’t be surprised if you find you drink a lot of coffee waiting for down and up-loads etc”, indicating it is a slow service. This is scary knowing that photos can take for ever to upload to the blog on slow systems.

We only have the iPhone and a Apple laptop that I don’t want to be carting around everywhere just to access the internet. I was thinking of stealing daughter Lisa’s iPad but she does use hers a lot even for work. Three months may be stretching the friendship if I take it.

I am posting the following information for the interest of those that may find themselves in a similar situation as it may be of some help to them also.

After a bit of thought and some research on good old Google, I downloaded three apps on my iPhone, ‘Word’ and ‘Pages’ that are Microsoft and Apple document handling apps and ‘Google Chrome’ to access my blog.

The following is a description of the process I need to go through to establish a blog posting while on board the ship and then use my iPhone to ‘Publish’ it once I have access to suitable WiFi eg ashore somewhere.

First of all I write the post in a Word document on my Apple mac and save it to an easily locatable file.

In this description I have used the ‘Pages’ app for document transfer but it is the same process if you use the ‘Word’ app. – I have yet to establish if one application works better than the other.

Step one.
Connect iPhone to laptop by USB.
1) Open iTunes on the laptop.
2) In iTunes select the phone icon then click ‘Apps’.
3) Scroll down to the bottom of ‘Apps’ window, then click ‘Pages’ in the ‘Apps’ list under ‘File Sharing’ (which is being recognised from the iPhone).
4) Click add, and all my laptop files show in a drop down window
5) Select the required file.

Step two - iPhone
1) Open ‘Pages’ app in the iPhone
2) In the document manager tap +, and several options appear, then tap ‘copy from iPhone’.
3) Tap the document again to activate transfer of the previously selected document from iTunes on the laptop to the iPhone. When the transfer has completed the document appears in the document manager.

Step three
When you know you have access to suitable WiFi

1) Go back into the ‘Pages’ app and in the document manager tap the screen for the option menu, ‘Select all’ and tap again, the next menu allows you to ‘Copy’.

2) Once you have copied the document turn on your WiFi and open the Google Chrome App to access the blog.

3) Establish a new post on the iPhone as you would normally on the laptop and tap the screen for the menu to allow you to paste the document you copied.

4) Publish in the normal manner, you can then go into your blog to check if it was successful.

I reckon this will test Nancy’s patience when I do this while we are sightseeing.

So my friends it depends upon how successful this process is as to how much photography gets uploaded.

Apart from that any suggestions are most welcome.

NB: I used the above process to establish and publish this post, however I used the 'Word' app and found it slightly more user friendly - both work.

Wednesday 13th May 2015

13th May
I carried out a trial pack today and came to the conclusion I need to do some culling. Unfortunately having to fly to Sydney means we are limited to a weight requirement and although we are both taking two suitcases each the need to cater for a lengthy period and extremes of temperature oblige us to carry a fair amount of gear including medication and the like.
Footwear!! It takes up so much room and weighs a tonne, it would be so much easier just to take a pair of thongs and some Ugg boots for the cold. Alas they won’t allow me to wear them into the dining room. Suit, tie and thongs!

I had a query from a friend the other day to say she hadn’t been able to access any photos on the blog and was aware I had posted some.
I run an Apple laptop and possibly the view on my computer is different to what other computers, tablets or phones will show, however knowing my friend runs an Apple also, I was able to help.
Photos that I had posted were on the first post of this new blog and by the time my friend was reading the blog it was showing the second posting and therefore the first post was classified as ‘Older Posts’ . In my case to access ‘Older Posts’ there is an active link at the bottom right of the post just click this. Or at the top right hand side of the post under my profile is a ‘Blog Archive’ very much like a contents list with live links to the various posts. Your view may be different to mine as is my iPhone’s view but just have a fiddle and contact me if you need any assistance.

Don’t forget to add your own comments periodically access to this is at the bottom left – click on where it says (at this stage) ‘No comments’.
